Before the expansion of railroads in the west, the Native Americans made use of the land in traditional ways. There was 28 tribes in the great plains, known as "Plain Indians". The Native American economy was centered around traditional trade alliances between the tribes. Native Americans respected the land and appreciated the many things that it had to offer. They shared the land with bison and antelope, which played an important role in their life as each tribe had its own hunting domain.
